Sick Day Remedies
Winter is that time of year that it seems like once one person gets sick, everybody gets sick. I'm lucky enough to work from home most days but I know when cold and flu season comes around, it usually ends up hitting offices pretty hard. Here are a few of my favorite home remedy tips to help get you back to feeling yourself, fast!
Honey
If you have a sore throat, honey just might be your best friend. Put it in your hot tea to help soothe your throat! Not only will the warm tea make you feel better, but the honey will taste great in your tea and it has great benefits. If you are feeling adventurous, mix 1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper, 1 tbsp of honey, 1 tsp apple cider vinegar, 2 tbsp water. Mix it up and it will be like a syrup consistency. It's perfect for soothing your throat.
Hydrate
Staying hydrated on the daily but it's so important to stay hydrated when your sick. When you are napping a lot, chances are you are sleeping through a meal or two and not drinking enough fluids. Drinking water will help fuel your immune system since your body uses your liquids to produce mucus when fighting viruses. Water will help thin out the mucus to reduce your congestion.
Gargling Salt Water
Mix a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and gargle for 30 seconds. It's not the best tasting water but it is quick, easy, and great for sore throats. The salt helps destroy any bacteria in your throat by drawing out the moisture.
Garlic
Garlic is one of my favorite things to cook with so of course, I love to integrate it into my sick day remedies. If you have a cold, raw garlic is great for getting rid of your sickness. When you cook with garlic, it tends to lose it's potency so raw garlic is the way to go. Mince 1-2 cloves and mix it into a small glass of water. Try to drink it as fast as you can! I promise the bad taste is worth the effects.
Those are just a few of my favorite things to incorporate into into my day when I am feeling crumby! I always recommend taking the day off of work and resting as much as you can. Sleep does wonders when you are feeling ill
Remember, if you are feeling sick you should always call your doctor!
