Flow Posing
Flow posing is my absolute favorite way to pose my clients. It saves time and lets your client also move naturally while in front of the camera. Be sure to read all the way to the bottom to grab my FREE cheat sheet that you can have handy at every shoot while you work on mastering flow posing.
Here are the top reasons why you need to start implementing flow posing into EVERY single session.
Time Saver. You will flow from each pose to the next, versus having to start all over again posing your client and getting her into the right position. I once did a boudoir shoot with another photographer, and she had me jump from laying on my back on the bed to standing next to a window, going back to bed to do kneeling shots, to getting back up and doing shots standing in front of the bed, etc. It was A LOT! A lot of moving around and not having very much time with each pose. It felt rushed and unnatural being photographed in this way. Plus it never gave me the chance to get into the mood and really let loose with the poses.
Natural Movement. After a few minutes in front of the camera, your client will get in the mood and not be as nervous anymore. It’s important not to stop that! Flow posing will enable them to stay where they are, while only changing subtle things to achieve a new look. Plus this allows your client to move naturally, which can often lead to amazing poses you weren’t even trying to get at first!
If you are not familiar with the concept of flow posing here is an easy example of it:
I am going to be using laying down on the bed for this example, but truly flow posing can be applied to every scenario and pose.
Start with your client on her side facing you while laying on the bed. Take photos of her whole body + detail shots in this position. Move around to her back and get a shot like this:
Then after that, have her roll onto her back. From there you get shots at eye level, from above her, detail and full-body again. The next two sample images show this:
After you have finished images on her back, have her roll onto the stomach to finish the flow. Do the same thing of walking around your client and get low and high angles.
That’s it! Flow posing can seem intimating at first, but all you need to do is practice it. It will make your life so much easier! No more getting stuck on what pose to do next!
